Millions of women have actively taken part in the women’s march across the United States after the Presidency election that had a rippling effect on scientists, who are now assembling by thousands next month, including in Denver.
More than 12,000 people have shown their interest in participating in the march, which is scheduled to be held on April 22nd (Earth Day) at Denver’s Civic Center Park.
According to the moment’s website, scientists and non-scientist alike will be marching to celebrate science and the role it plays in people’s lives.
The organizers added that the march will strive to also hold politicians accountable, so that policy makers enact “evidence based policies in the public interest”.
They have directly pointed to policies enacted by the Donald Trump’s administration since he entered the White House; the most recent executive order drastically changes the role of the United States, it plays in the fight against climate change.
Caroline Weinber, a medical researcher, who is helping to organize the march, said that “It is not a partisan issue. People from the entire political spectrum should be alarmed by these efforts to deny scientific progress.”
Still, some people in the scientific community are scared that the march will eclipse the overall message and instead it will get misconstrued as a way of protesting Donald Trump and his administration by the general public.
Coastal ecologist Robert Young wrote in an opinion piece for the New York Times that “Trying to recreate the pointedly political Women’s March will serve only to reinforce the narrative from skeptical conservatives that scientists are an interest group and politicize their data, research and findings for their own ends.”
The movement boasts more than 840,000 members on their official Facebook group.
Total 44 countries are about to take part in the ‘March for Science’ with nearly 400 rallies scheduled to take place on that day.
Along with Denver, people from Aspen, Avon, Breckenridge, Carbondale, Colorado Springs, Estes Park, Fort Collins, Grand Junction and Gunnison will be taking part in the march.
