Teens stopped from boarding Untied Airlines for wearing leggings

Two teenage girls were reportedly stopped from boarding a United Airlines flight an agent from Denver International Airport, because they were wearing leggings. But, the airline officials said that it was within their right to not allow them in.

Shannon Watts witnessed the whole event, occurred at the gate of DIA.

“She’s forcing them to change or put dresses on over leggings or they can’t board. Since, when does @united police women’s clothing?” Watts tweeted.

In response to the complaint, the airline at first said that they had all the rights to refuse a passenger, who are not properly dressed from boarding a flight, and that the decisions to not allow a person from boarding was up to the discretion of the agent at the gate.

After the event came into light, the company was slammed with several tweets from baffled customers, the company clarified that the teens were United Pass riders, an employee pass which requires all the pass holders to follow a dress code, which according to the company the teens did not meet.

United Airline spokesperson Jonathan Guerin said, an internal policy for employees using this travel benefit “specifically forbids leggings while travelling”.

“Our regular passengers are not going to be denied boarding because they are wearing leggings or yoga pants,” Guerin said. “But when flying as a pass traveler, we require this pass travelers to follow the rules and that is one of those rules.”

People, who are familiar with the buddy pass, are aware of the policy, which has been in place for quite some time.

"As a condition of that benefit you have to follow the dress code - because indirectly you're representing the company," said Denver7 reporter Marc Stewart, who regularly covers the Colorado airline industry.
