Denver Public reaction to mega music festival

Neighbors around a historic 18-hole golf course in south Denver are sounding off an effort to bring a mega music festival to the golf course. The proposed music event is expected to attend by over tens of thousands of people, daily, to Overland Park Golf Course near South Broadway and Florida Avenue.

People gathered at the golf course’s clubhouse on Tuesday during a city-hosted event to learn more from city leaders and event promoter AEG.

Earhart is one of many people excited for the multi-day event, while there are others dreading by calling the event as potential nightmare.

"There will be a lot of trash," golf course neighbor Joanne Weiss predicts. "There will be crime -- the potential for a lot of trouble."

The event will have strict safety measure, the city’s representatives said. Concert proponents said that the money is an attractive incentive for Denver.

"There would be an absolute economic impact to the community," said Grace Lopez-Ramirez of Denver's Office of Special Events.

The exact amount of money the city will earn from event organizers and in the form of permit fees is not yet known.

The multi-day event is proposed for 2018 September, and the park would be closed for roughly six weeks to allow staging and fence set up and deconstruction.

The main concern is that the concert attendees might damage the gold course’s well manicured turf.

"I don't think it'll cause a bunch of damage to the course like some people might think," said Earhart.

According to Lopez Ramirez, city officials said that the next steps will include more informational meetings with event organizers. The meetings will help Denver gauge community reaction to guide the decision making.

The Denver City Council would need to approve a contract between the Denver and the event organizers to bring the music festival.
