US President Donald Trump took part in Diwali festivities at the White House on Tuesday (local time) and sent his best wishes to the people of India and Indian-Americans for the celebration.

In his opening statements, the US President complimented Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referring to him as a "wonderful individual" and a "great friend," while emphasizing the relationship between the US and India in terms of business and regional stability. "I want to share our warm wishes with the people of India. I just had a conversation with your Prime Minister today, and it was really good. We discussed trade... He is very interested in it. We also touched on the need to avoid conflicts with Pakistan. Since trade was a topic, I could mention that we need to stay at peace with Pakistan and India. That was a very positive point," Trump shared during the event.

"He is a wonderful individual and has become a close friend of mine through the years," Trump continued.

Emphasizing the festival's meaningful nature, President Trump remarked, "Soon, we will light the diya as a sign of hope in the triumph of light over darkness... It represents knowledge overcoming ignorance and good triumphing over evil. During Diwali, people remember ancient tales of defeated foes, barriers removed, and those who were imprisoned set free." He added that the diya's light serves as a reminder "to pursue the way of wisdom, work hard, and to always express gratitude for our numerous blessings." After his opening comments, Trump lit the diyas to honor the festival at the White House. Several high-ranking officials from the Trump Administration, including FBI Director Kash Patel, ODNI Director Tulsi Gabbard, White House Deputy Press Secretary Kush Desai, India's Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and the US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, attended the celebration.

A group of notable Indian-American business leaders were also present at the event, demonstrating the increasing involvement of the Indian community in US-India relations. The White House celebration highlights the cultural significance of Diwali in American society and the strong bond between the United States and India. Previously, US Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi and Brian Fitzpatrick introduced a bipartisan resolution in the US House of Representatives to acknowledge the cultural and historical importance of Diwali, starting on October 20. A press release mentioned that the resolution recognizes Diwali's cultural, spiritual, and historical significance for over three million Indian-Americans, including Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs. It showcases the growing acknowledgment of the Indian community's contributions to the US. Diwali is a five-day festival that begins on Dhanteras, where people buy jewelry or utensils and worship the gods.

The second day is known as Naraka Chaturdashi. This day is also referred to as 'Chhoti Diwali' or Small Diwali. The third day of Diwali is the most significant part of the festivities. On this day, people honor Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi, praying to them for blessings of wealth and prosperity. The fourth day of Diwali is reserved for Govardhan Puja. The fifth day is referred to as Bhai Dooj. On this occasion, sisters wish for their brothers' long and joyful lives through the Tika ceremony, and in return, brothers give gifts to their sisters.
