Boy dies after falling from roof at Denver Academy

According to the Denver Police Department the 17-year-old boy, who hit his head after falling at Denver Academy, while playing on the roof on Friday evening has died.

The teenager identified as Paul Kinningham was with his two friends, when he fell, according to the boy’s family.

The boy’s father said that one of his son’s friends plunged and cleared, what he described as a substantial gap, but when his son tried to make the jump, he slipped and hit his head, sustaining severe injuries.

A GoFundMe page has been setup for the funeral expenses of Kinningham.

A friend told Kinningham’s mother said that the group was playing on the roof of Denver Academy.

A neighbor Denis Koval said that teens usually climb onto the roof of the school. He never thought that a tragedy like this would ever occur, but it is not unbelievable.

"They're running, taking pictures. You know, they're doing their teenager stuff," Koval said when describing what he's seen.

The Denver Police Department originally reported that their officers were investigating a death at the Denver Academy in the area of the East Cliff Avenue and South Dahlia Street at around 8:15 p.m. on Friday, after a friend of Kinningham called police to report what was going on.

During a press conference spokesperson for the Denver Police Department, John White said that the fall “does not appear to be criminal in nature.”

He added that Kinningham and two other boys were not students at the academy.

A spokesperson for Denver Academy said that the school is aware of the incident and are awaiting further details from the authorities on the situation.

According to the school’s website the Denver Academy is an independent and private day school serving grades 1-12 in Denver.
