When the announcement was made that Rishabh Pant would miss the rest of the England Test series, the selection team led by Ajit Agarkar quickly tried to reach out to Ishan Kishan, aiming to include the wicket-keeper batsman as Pant's substitute due to his injury. However, Ishan clearly told them he could not participate because he had suffered an unusual injury that barred him from flying to England for the last Test, even if he had wished to. Reports have widely indicated that Ishan Kishan is unavailable for travel to England as he is not fully fit. Though the selectors made contact, they were informed that Ishan could not travel due to problems with his ankle. According to another report in the Times of India, Ishan hurt himself after falling off a scooty, resulting in needing stitches on his left ankle. Therefore, it was impossible for him to replace Pant and fly to England.

Recently, Kishan played for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship after signing a short-term contract. He impressed many by scoring 87 and 77 runs during the matches. As stated by a report in Cricbuzz, N Jagadeesan is "almost certain" to take Pant's place for the rest of the series. Jagadeesan hails from Tamil Nadu and is a right-handed wicket-keeper batter with experience in 52 first-class games. In those, he caught 133 balls and made 14 stumpings, amassing 3373 runs in first-class cricket. The report mentioned that Jagadeesan "is expected to join the squad before the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy." The selectors and team management had initially considered Ishan Kishan as a suitable choice, but it later became clear that the 27-year-old keeper from Jharkhand was not available.
