Wanted suspect killed, 3 officers injured in confrontation

A wanted suspect was shot and killed along with three Denver police officers who got injured in a confrontation on Wednesday in the southwest part of the city.

Chief Robert White said that at the scene that the officers’ injuries were believed to be minor and not from gunshot wounds. Authorities said that two of the officers were taken to a hospital.

White said that the suspect was battling with one of the officers over his duty weapon when they shot fired.

He said, “The individual was fighting with one of the officers over his particular service weapon. Several shots were fired. The individual was struck.” He adde, “Be mindful, this is very preliminary.”

The encounter happened about noon on the 2600 block of West Bates Avenue, a residential neighborhood. Police said that officers were in the area for an attempted “pickup,” but did not immediately elaborate.

White said that the officers were searching for the wanted suspect in a home when he fled out a back window as officers tried to contact him. Officers chased him before the fatal confrontation happened in the middle of the street.

Sharon Brusseau, who lived on the block, said that she saw the police patrol cars driving slowly on her street just before the confrontation and heard two gunshots about 15 minutes later. She said, “I heard the cops hollering back and forth to each other: “Are you OK? Are you OK?’ ”.
