Apple is reportedly getting ready to release a new high-end laptop called the MacBook Ultra, after recently launching the MacBook Neo and models powered by the M5 chip last week. A report suggests this new device could come with an OLED screen and support for touch input, representing a major change in Apple's MacBook offerings. It is likely to be unveiled later this year and may create a new premium category in Apple laptops instead of just replacing the existing MacBook Pro models. In the latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted that the upcoming OLED touchscreen MacBook might not be a new version of the MacBook Pro. Rather, it might launch as an entirely new model placed above the existing MacBook Pro range. The device, which Gurman describes as the “touch-screen and OLED high-end MacBook,” could turn out to be Apple's most luxurious laptop yet.

This new MacBook is expected to be the first one from Apple to have an OLED display, along with touchscreen capabilities. Previous reports indicated that Apple was planning to add OLED screens and touch features in future MacBook Pro models, possibly using M6-series chips by late 2026. However, the reporter believes that Apple might launch these features as part of a new product line rather than just upgrade the MacBook Pro series. This might also indicate that Apple is looking to offer a wider range of price options. But if Apple goes with OLED displays, it might lead to higher prices. Gurman pointed out that when Apple introduced OLED screens on the iPhone X in 2017 and on the iPad Pro in 2024, it raised prices by about 20 percent. A similar price increase could place the new MacBook more firmly in the premium market. The laptop could possibly use “Ultra” branding, like the Apple Watch Ultra. While the final name for the new MacBook has not been confirmed yet, Gurman mentioned that the MacBook Ultra name would indicate its top status in Apple's range of laptops.

The expected launch for the device is towards the end of the year, but Apple has not officially acknowledged that it is in development.
