In 2023, Delhi Airport (DEL) remained among the top 10 busiest airports globally, handling more than 72.2 million passengers, according to the Airports Council International (ACI). This reflects a consistent growth rate of 20.36% and highlights the impressive recovery of the Indian aviation industry. However, ACI's evaluation suggests that Delhi Airport has slightly slipped in its ranking, potentially losing its 9th position to Chicago. ACI's preliminary ranking for 2023 showcases a dynamic shift influenced by the resurgence of international air travel.

ACI World Director General, Luis Felipe de Oliveira, observed that the global air travel in 2023 was driven primarily by the international segment, propelled by various factors. This revival is evident in the top rankings, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retaining its title as the busiest airport in the world. Dubai International Airport, on the other hand, made a significant jump to second place, surpassing Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, which now holds the third position. Despite not maintaining its 2022 ranking, Delhi Airport continues to have a strong presence among the top 10 busiest airports.

According to Oliveira, Delhi Airport has maintained its top ranks and made significant progress in 2023 compared to 2019. The airport handled over 72.2 million passengers, showing a remarkable year-on-year growth of 20.36% compared to 2022. This growth indicates a strong recovery in the Indian aviation sector. However, there was a slight drop in ranking from 9th place in 2022, as Chicago O'Hare Airport surpassed Delhi in 2023. Overall, the global aviation industry is moving closer to pre-pandemic levels, with passenger traffic reaching nearly 8.5 billion in 2023, a 27.2% increase from 2022 and a 93.8% recovery from 2019. The ACI's ranking system, which analyzes data from over 2,600 airports worldwide, provides valuable insights into travel demand and airport performance. Delhi Airport's consistent presence in the top 10 highlights its vital role as a major international hub and its contribution to global connectivity.
