My Brothers Keeper Summit held in Denver

My Brothers Keeper Summit was concluded at the Community College of Denver during the last week. The summit is a part of national initiative, that was launched by president Barack Obama. The theme of the program was “It Still Takes A Village.”

“That’s what ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ is all about. Helping more of our young people stay on track. Providing the support they need to think more broadly about their future. Building on what works – when it works, in those critical life-changing moments,” president Obama has said while introducing summit in 2014.

The summit aims to empower youth, especially  minority boys. The workshop was attended by nearly 200 youth and program advocates. The summit also included  lectures of four core areas,  juvenile justice, education,  work force development and  social and emotional well-being.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said that, “Since Denver accepted the My Brother’s Keeper Community Challenge in 2014, hundreds of individuals have been championing the effort to assure that boys and young men of color have everything they need to maximize their potential.”

“It’s not that people don’t want opportunities like this. It’s that they don’t see opportunities like this. It’s not even a product of their head you know,” he said.

Clinton Brown, a 2013 North graduate, said that, "Growing up, I never had anyone to walk me through this, so now this is my chance to show the students that people from our neighborhood can be successful."
