One more mother milk bank in Jaipur

A mother's milk bank is opened at a multi-specialty private hospital in Jaipur in association with a voluntary organization. The milk bank was launched by Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in association with Inaya Foundation.

Speaking at a press conference, Inaya Foundation secretary Nitisha Sharma said, "We had soft-launched operations of the Amrit, mother's milk bank, from the first week of February. Till April 10, we have collected over 25,000 ml of milk donated by 74 mothers."

G.N. Saxena, principal of Mahatma Gandhi Medical University, said that 196 units of mother's milk have been provided to newborns till 10 April 2016, at the hospital. In Rajasthan, this milk bank is the third such mother's milk bank.

In April 2013, in Udaipur, the first bank was inaugurated at a government hospital that was located nearly 400 km from Jaipur. Similar banks are located in Pune, Jaipur, Mumbai, Surat, and Kolkata. Mr Sharma said that the infant mortality rate could be lessened by 22% through breast-feeding as well as donated mother's milk. If a nursing mother wishes to donate milk, she has to go through blood tests and her milk would be tested to rule out any bacteria.
